Experimental and Funky
This special category for SCH ABC entries is to honor a former member Jarrad Weikel. Jarrad was a member of the Stoney Creek Homebrewers for nearly a decade when he passed away unexpectedly in February 2022. He was only 40 years old, and we lost him far too soon. In the hope of providing a suitable memorial for a man of science and a Marine, SCH established the Jarrad A. Weikel Scholarship Committee to raise funds to endow an annual scholarship in his name. The scholarship will be awarded to a veteran (or the child of a veteran), with demonstrated need, who is studying for a career in the medical or scientific fields.
Proceeds from entries submitted in BJCP categories 28A-D, 31A-B, and 34B-C will be given to the endowment that is being created. This is the only category where brewers can submit more than one entry per sub-category. We appreciate your support of the charity and the willingness to push the boundaries of the craft.

A little more about Jarrad
Jarrad earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Penn State University. After college, he enlisted in the Marines where he served two combat tours in Iraq as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Jarrad was always willing to give of his time for veterans in need. He was a member of the Phoenixville VFW Post 1564 where he would volunteer at their benefit events, and drive veterans to their appointments. At the time of his passing, he was studying for an advanced degree in pharmacy.
Jarrad was an accomplished home brewer, and eagerly shared both his knowledge and his beer and mead with SCH and with the wider brewing community. Those who knew him frequently commented on his generosity, his knowledge and creativity, and his affable nature. We will remember him, and through this scholarship his legacy will support students who share his passion for lifelong learning and devotion to service.
Also, if you are interested in supporting the charity in other ways, we are also hosting a memorial golf outing on Friday November 15, 2024. Details on how to register for this event will be made available shortly.
